How to make it

  • Heat oven to 350 then put butter on both sides of bread and toast bread.
  • Cook and stir meat, onion, celery, mustard and 1/2 teaspoon salt until meat is brown and onion is tender.
  • Alternate layers of toast, meat mixture and cheese in greased baking pan.
  • Mix remaining ingredients then pour over layers in pan.
  • Sprinkle with paprika then bake uncovered for 35 minutes.

    This is great stuff. '70s comfort food.

    The recipe is from a Betty Crocker (I think Betty Croker) recipe card club. It came on a card - a packet or two of recipe cards were sent each month - that were kept in a large plastic recipe box, with a divider separating the interior into two sections. The recipe boxes came in green, orange, and I think yellow. There was a lip on the front of the lid for holding whatever particular recipe you were making at the time.

    Anyone besides me remember these? :)
