Ingredients
  • Burgers
  • 3/4 lb ground chuck
  • 1 small white onion, fine dice
  • 1 green bell pepper, small dice
  • 1 cup chopped baby bellas
  • 1/2 tsp fennel seed (optional)
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Sauce
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1 tbsp minced garlic
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp sweet paprika
  • Pinch of cinnamon
  • Buns:
  • 4 slices thick, hearty bread (I used sourdough..cause I like it.)
  • 2-3 tbsp butter, margarine, whatever
  • 1 tbsp chopped parsley
  • Garlic powder, to taste
  • 4 oz shredded cheese of your choice

Directions
  1. Mix all burger ingredients until just combined. Divide into four even patties and allow them to rest a few minutes.
  2. In a medium saucepan, combine all sauce ingredients over medium heat. Bring to a gentle simmer and keep warm, stirring occasionally.
  3. Heat a heavy skillet large enough to hold all four patties over medium high heat. Plop the burgers in and let em cook, turning only once. When they are almost as done as you want them, remove patties and drain off grease. Add warm sauce to skillet and return burgers, nestling them down in the sauce. Let simmer a few more minutes until burgers reach desired level of doneness and keep warm.
  4. Meanwhile, get your broiler going. Combine butter, parsley, and garlic to taste and spread evenly over each slice of bread.
  5. Top bread with cheese and broil 3-4 minutes or until cheese is bubbly and edges are golden brown.
  6. Immediately top with burger patties and spoon lots and lots of delish sauce over them. Crack open a beer and enjoy.
