Ingredients

How to make it

  • On the stovetop, sautee onions, garlic and oil till translucent and soft.
  • Add the meat and brown--don't forget to season!
  • Add the savory and tomatoes.
  • If you are using whole potatoes, cut them into small or bite sized cubes.
  • Add the cubed pottoes to the meat and cook with a little water (so the bottom does not burn) till the potatoes are done.
  • Transfer to a oiled 8x8 (or square) baking dish, and add 1/2 C water.
  • Bake uncovered at 350F for 45 mins.
  • While the dish is baking prepare the top:
  • Whisk the eggs, yogurt, milk, flour and salt--make sure there are no lumps. The consistency should be like a thick batter.
  • When the 45 mins have past, pull the dish out of the oven. Pour the topping over the dish and place under the broiler for 5-7 mins till the top is brown and is cooked all the way thru. (Watch it so it doesn't burn!!)
  • Remove from the oven/broiler and let sit for 10-15 mins then serve with yogurt as a garnish.

Deb, you can get Chubrytza at a regular store too. I found ground Savory in the spice isle, and find that I like that better than the dried herb. (Savory is Chubrytza)

This was great! We recently had a Relief Society Cultural day luncheon and I brought this and shopska salad. I ordered chubritza from one of the stores listed on the mission website. Anyway, the mussaka was a big hit. Thanks for posting the recipe :)
