German Easter Braid with Marzipan Filling

- 500 g flour shopping list
- 40 g yeast shopping list
- 80 g sugar shopping list
- 1 egg shopping list
- 60 g butter shopping list
- 1 grated peel from a whole lemon shopping list
- 200 ml lukewarm milk shopping list
- 100 g powdered sugar , divided shopping list
- 200 g marzipan paste shopping list
- 1 egg , separated shopping list
- 1 orange , peel and juice, divided shopping list
- 70 g pistachios shopping list
How to make it
- Prep does not include yeasat dough prep, rising time etc.
- Prepare a standard sweet dough from the yeast, flour, sugar, butter ,egg and milk and grated lemon zest. ( knead, let rise, punch down, rise again etc etc )
- Separate the second egg.
- Mix the yolk with 1/2 of the powdered sugar till foamy
- Crumble the marzipan into small cubes
- Mix marzipan mixture with egg yolk mixture till smooth consistency
- Beat the white stiff and fold into mixture
- Stir in half the grated orange peel.
- Take the prepared dough and roll out to a rectangle 40 x 60 cm
- Spread with the marzipan mixture and sprinkle with 3/4 of the pistachios
- Cut the dough into 4 strips ( 10 x 60 cm ) lengthwise
- Form and roll each stip into a roll as you would for a strudel, sealing in filling tightly
- Fashion the four rolls into one braided loaf
- Seal and tuck edges together.
- Let loaf rest for 10 minutes on the counter
- Preheat oven to 200C
- Bake until golden about 35 minutes.
- Remove from oven and cool to warm
- Mix remaining powder sugar with remaining juice from half the orange and a little orange peel.
- Pour over loaf and sprinkle with remianing pistachios
