Dutch ovens

Has anyone had experience cooking in Dutch ovens over the coals? I have a small(8c.)one and have found some recipes to try. I'm just looking for tips that will make my experience next week more enjoyable....lol....like not burning the dinner or dessert!

I notice that some of the time the DO is over the coals while other times it's seated in.

I did find these amazing sites (but I was looking forward to hearing actual experiences from foodie friends):

Hey Dynie- You're in for a lot of fun!

Have you seasonned it yet? This is a must must must before you go! Here's a link with instructions:

Also, don't forget the best part about having a dutch oven is using it like an oven- put coals over and under and make bread, cake or puddings. Mmm!

    Thanks Holly!
The one I have isn't cast iron, although I'll be looking into getting one! The one I have was my grandmother's- and who knows whose it was before her !?!

Our group at the camp was wowed by the peach cobbler I made in the oven. I did put coals on the lid. It took awhile to get the coals for it, but oh so worth the wait! Once we started the cobbler we let it "bake" for about 40 mins. Any longer and it would've been burnt. This is what makes me think the cast iron would be better. It could bake longer w/o burning.

That site you told me about, along with the others I found, are well worth checking out before you purchase or use one!
