Hi Ya'll,
I am trying to decide between the Nikon D40, the Olympus 500, or the Canon XTI? Any suggestions. I do alot of portrait photography, and sports.

camera itself matters little nowadays...it's the Glass, (Lenses), Nikon and Canon though are my choices and in fact I use Canon, and I am a photographer...I use an older Canon 20D, but they have released a number of updated models since then, 30D, 40D, XTI and XSI, I love canon lenses also, but the nikon D40 is a great little camera, it won't use older Nikon F lenses though, only their newer AFS lenses, so that adds a bit of expense to it, but you could go with the nikon D80, which is an awesome body and uses older non Autofocus lenses, you'll have to use manual focus, but the older glass is very good equipment, and quite reasonable to buy!! I'm a Canon adict, but the D80 is my next camera of choice!! If you choose the nikon d40 make sure it's the updated d40X...only a few dollars more but more features and newer stock!!

Nikon is offering a 2 lens special right now...for an extra $50 you get a 200mm telephoto besides the stock 18-55 lens that comes with the kit!!

the Nikon D40 is only 6.1 megapixel, but the D40X is 10 megapixel...making the resolution sharper at larger prints...You won't see the difference in a normal photograph though...6, 8, 10, 12 megapixel, only a trained eye who knows what he's looking for will see the difference, unless you have a large 18" picture print!!
but the D40X has other nice perks...on-camera picture adjustments etc...so does the Nikon D80 and D60(newest DSLR in the nikon pro-sumer lineup)!!
