Rhubarb - hot or not?

I'm almost 50 years old and have yet to try rhubarb ... what does it look like and how do you know if it is ripe? Does it look like red celery? I never experienced a rhubarb ;-/

There were some green parts, too. I've seen them also VERY large, long & thick stalks in a deeper reddish almost purple but haven't tried it. I don't know if there is any difference between the taste or texture. We quite enjoyed the rhubarb. It's tartness & sort of gelatinous-ness (funny, weird NONword) serve well in Rhubarb Compote. I'm certain there are other members who could give you better, more knowledgeable info on rhubarb. I'd say give it a try if you come across it!
