Mayo Subtitution

  • nycea 15 years ago
A lot of recipes for lunches call for mayo- A LOT OF MAYO. I've read that some people substitute plain or Greek yogurt. Others cut the mayo with yogurt in order to retain some of the flavor. I'll try this soon and let you know how it turns out. If anyone has past experience let us know!

I use sour cream and/or yogurt in some recipes calling for Mayo. A hint, full fat mayo is a better choice than the low fat version, as that is full of sugar and other additives that don't belong in mayo. There is a new olive oil mayo that's pretty good and healthier.

Wow I didn't know that! The olive oil mayo sounds like a great choice, i'll have to try that. I tried using the plain yogurt and it works really well. It's tends to be a bit more bland though so I recommend adding addition seasonings to whatever your making. Thanks for the tip!

So I just recently substituted plain yogurt for mayo in my Curry Chicken Salad Sandwich recipe and it worked really well. I think this swap works best for strong flavored recipes, with the curry powder the lack of mayo flavor doesn't detract at all. The difference in calories is also astounding! I recommend it!
