Baking Powder Biscuits

Great recipe. Instead of patting flat I rolled into two oz balls. Inside was light and fluffy. Will be making again.

Nice looking recipe, Nadine. It's very similar to my tried and true, so I know it had to be good. I really hate when directions aren't specific, either for mixing, bake time, or oven temp. How hot is hot? With the oven just on or set on broil?? I know biscuits are baked at 450 degrees because I've been making them for years, but that would be very confusing to a beginning baker.

Sorry to rant and sound so cranky (I'm not directing this at you), but that's a real pet peeve of mine. Maybe the recipe submitters can make their recipes in their sleep, but they should assume people trying their recipes for the first time have never cooked or baked before and need specific instructions. Even after all these years, I still do!

These do sound really good, I love biscuits with some home made jam :)

I'm with Bakerme, a "hot" oven is not very good directions. I would consider myself an experienced cook, but even now, I wouldn't have known what temperature to cook the biscuits at, since I have only baked biscuits maybe 5 times ever?! Sounds like you got it figured out though Nadine :)

Bakerme if your ranting then rant away as I totally agree with you. I do a fair amount of baking and found it confusing as some would say 400 is hot and other say 450.

Mlv2c it was only a by guess and by golly on the temp for me and I happy that it worked out.

Thanks for understanding, Nadine. I just hate to post anything negative and have someone think I'm directing it at them personally!

Bet these went great with your stew. So hard to find good biscuit recipes. When you find a good one you need to hang on to it. Love the submitter's photo of the recipe. Obviously from a very, very old cook book! Even it doesn't contain baking times or temps. I'm picturing an antique stove with a side box for wood. I love vintage recipes! Great find!

I Love vintage recipes too!! I have an old cook book just like that one, and it only says hot oven, moderate oven etc...and rarely if any directions! Back in the day when Mother's and Grandmothers showed you how to cook :)
So glad they worked out for you Nadine!

I just love those old recipe books but it is difficult to actually make the recipe at times but sounds like you did a great job Nadine. Nice looking recipe.
