Martha Washington Candy

    Martha Washington Balls by Zena824
Not sure what this candy should be classified as, a "ball" doesn't sound right. Maybe a bonbon, truffle, or just candy?

I made these almost two weeks ago and they've sat in the back of my fridge and I almost forgot about them! The good thing about being coated in chocolate is they will last a long time in an airtight container.
I first heard of these candy's last Christmas, I think on Pinterest. So I did a search here and only found two recipes with the name; this recipe and this one Elegant Martha Washington Candy This is the only one I could find with cherries Chocolare Cherry Snowballs
Anyways, I'd thought I'd add my review to this recipe Martha Washington Balls as I used these amounts except to add half a jar of chopped maraschino cherries. I was NOT going to use paraffin wax in the chocolate coating. Instead I used semi-sweet bakers chocolate and tempered it. Next time I would use unsweetened coconut as I found the filling quite sweet. And maybe even use bittersweet chocolate on the outside, or half bittersweet and semi-sweet.
I love that it's a no bake dessert! The assembly was not difficult. I love to play with chocolate, so the tempering was easy for me. But you could easily pick up some candi-quick chocolate if that scares you.
The kids loved them, and they usually do not like desserts with coconut and especially nuts! So I think all the flavors and textures work well together. :)

Wow! Those are pretty fancy Shona! Nice job! It's fun you posted this as a girlfriend of mine just emailed me yesterday saying she'd made some Martha Washington bonbons over the weekend and I'd never heard of them before. She didn't use cherries in hers though. My Mom would love these because she's a major Cherry fan. Bookmarked to try! Nice post! Gorgeous pictures!

    Thanks :)
I thought they had to have a cherry in it. But now that I searched google, I see the original Southern recipes do not have cherries, lol. Hopefully Martha won't be too mad about the cherry addition ;)
    They are fun to make!

Linda, I know right!?! Lol, the kids remembered and asked where those chocolate balls were last night. Originally I was waiting for better lighting to take a picture and didn't want the kids to eat them before then; but I guess I hid them so well that I hid them on myself too! ;)

Great photo, Cosmicmother! This one is making my mouth water. I hate it when people add wax to chocolate. I can feel it on my teeth. Ewe! I don't know much about Martha Washington candy, but you would think it should have cherries in it because George Washington was famous for chopping down the cherry tree. I was really surprised to see this is considered a Southern candy. I did find one Martha Washington candy recipe on the internet that uses cherries.

They look so professional looking!! Me and the kiddos would love them, I could see them turning into a big problem for me though, I'd be constantly popping one in my mouth :P
