Spiced Panko Crusted Pork Chops by Pleclare

I had high hopes for this! But it did not work for me. I should have followed my gut and added the 5 spice powder to the pork instead of the crust. Not only does cinnamon (in the 5 spice) burn when added directly to heat, the combo of it with the panko and egg mixture made it smell and taste like French toast! So I couldn't get past that French toast taste and scraped off the panko. The pork itself was left with no flavour what so ever. So I think adding the spices to the pork itself would be far, far better!
Since the flavour of 5 spice is close to the flavours of Pho, I made a Pho fried rice to go with it. The rice was excellent! Pho Fried Rice
The rest of the family ate the pork chops with the crust, and dipped it in ketchup. I'm sure the ketchup with the 5 spice went quite well and made it more edible! So because they ate it all I gave it 3 stars. I wouldn't make it again with the 5 spice in the crust. However the double crusting with the hoisin sauce in the egg mixture was a great idea that I'd use again! :)

Nice photos, Cosmicmother! You had me going when I saw the name of the recipe. It sounds good. Too bad it wasn't what you expected. I'm on the fence when it comes to 5 Spice. Can't make up my mind if I like it or not. Glad your family ate it and it didn't go to waste.

Your photos look delicious Shona! Too bad the recipe itself didn't work out to be all that. I love the combinations of spices in 5-Spice. Happy the rice recipe saved the day.

    Thanks ladies! :)
Diz, some brands seem to have more cinnamon than others. I'm going to make it myself next time and use half the amount of cinnamon. I just couldn't find the Sichuan peppercorns last time I went shopping to make the 5 spice powder.
Linda, I think this would work well with just a sprinkling of 5 spice on the pork, might be worth trying it that way! I might give this a shot again that way soon. :)
