Scone Etiquette

  • thepiggs 17 years ago
I found this tidbit of etiquette and thought it might be interesting. How many of you have been wrong??? :)

How to eat a scone: Again, contrary to recent “experts” advice (now I understand how rumors get started!) it is not only improper to slice a scone, in its entirety, horizontally to be slathered in jam and cream, it is very common behavior. Although some establishments will serve a sliced scone pre-prepared with jam and cream, this is merely a gimmick introduced to save time. It may now be”acceptable” but it will never be correct. A hostess should instruct and insist that the scones, for large functions or buffets, be made smaller into bite size/”standing room” size.

The correct manner in which one eats a scone is the same manner in which one eats a dinner roll. Simply break off a bite size only piece, place it on your plate and then apply, with your bread and butter knife, the jam and cream. A fork is not used to eat a scone. Please, no dipping!

Wait. First, what do you mean by scone? Do you mean the British scone, which is nearly identical (in most cases it is identical) to biscuits, or do you mean the American scones, with chocolate chips and so forth in them? If you mean British scones, then your source is essentially saying that we don't know how to eat biscuits, which is ridiculous. If you mean the American scones, I'd be curious to know where this etiquette came from. My British friends have never heard of this, by the way. In Britain, they split them open and put butter, double cream, jam, etc., on them.

Actually, thepigg is correct on the etiquette for eating scones and bread and American biscuits and bread rolls etc.... That is PROPER Etiquette. One should always break off a bit, add on the jam and cream and eat it that way. It is just different, where different folks come from. It is easier to put the jam and clotted cream on the scone and eat it that way.

What I would give for some wonderful Cornish Clotted cream
    for me scones just now.

That was weird, the whole of my message didn't come through.. let's try this agin..

There is Proper Etiquette and then there is acceptable Etiquette.

If we were to go into a high end posh restaurant with folks who have impeccable manners, they would never cut a bread roll in two and slather butter one it and eat it, they would break off some of the roll and butter that little bit and eat that. But when ya go to Dee’s Dinner you’d cut your roll in half, butter it up, might even fold it in half and consume it.

Just like the ‘Proper’ way to fix a cuppa tea is to put the sugar and cream in the cup first, then add the tea. But for most it is done with the sugar and cream added after the tea has been poured.

I also have to say that I feel my manners/etiquette are better at a restaurant or someone’s home then when I sit down for a meal in my own home. I would think that for most of us that is probably true. But I cannot speak for everyone.

Since I moved to England, I have relearned to use my knife and folk European style, and I have to admit, I find it much improved over the way WE American’s do it. All that cutting food putting down the knife swappin’ hands back and forth.. oh geeeee come on let’s just eat.

Does anyone know the PROPER way to eat a banana????

OK kids elbows off the table and stop sluppin’ your soup!

I was informed that I didn't eat my banana right.
I peel my banana from the stem end down part way, eat some banana and then peel more down. I like a holder for my banana, not holding the peeled banana in my hand.
I was told that I was peeling the banana from the wrong end!!! I was supposed to use the stem end to hold the banana.
I was also told that the monkeys/apes eat their bananas from the blossom end, not the stem. They are the ones who are supposed to KNOW how to eat them!!!
