Saturday's Spies......

  • chuckieb 8 years ago
Good Morning Everyone! I am enjoying my cup of coffee in front of the fire. Managed to sleep in 'til 7 a.m. this morning so was very pleased about that. Surely the Jet Lag should almost be over? :)
The day is ahead of us and we have no real plans. We are thinking of going to see the new Tom Hanks Movie "Bridge of Spies"......and there is also a Christmas Bazaar going on at a nearby Russian Church today that might be fun to take a look at as well.
Not sure what to do about dinner at this point.
How sad on the little girl dying from Leukemia Karen. Breaks my heart. The poor family. :(
It sounds like a lovely visit you'll have for Thanksgiving at Michael's Aunts Michelle. Sorry to hear about his Grandfather but really nice you can all be together. Making the bean bag toss game sounds kind of fun!
LOL @ not having enough time to try all the recipes you bookmark Bren! I hear you! Keni used to laugh at me because my bookmarks were so high....I currently stand at 1925. Keni used to be so disciplined and keep her numbers waaaaayyyy lower. :) Asparagus with seeds? What kind of seeds? It's always fun to hear the different prices on items that people have to pay and I also like hearing what temperature and weather everyone else is getting as well. :) A fun thing about a site that has people from all over the world on it. :)
I too have a soft spot for the original Girl Guide/Scout cookies Marie. I used to sell tons of those things when I was young. And people were so excited to get them! :)
Congrats to Wayne on getting a deer Karen. Wherever are you going to put it as you said the other one filled up your freezer! :) Wow on Wayne's sister expecting 7" of snow!
Hi Wendy! Nice to see you check in last night. How are things on your end?
Wishing everyone a great day! Happy Saturday!

Hi Janet. I slept until 8:00 this morning (yawn) and am working on a cup of coffee in the LR. Mel and the kittens are lined up in front of the window watching an adorable little bird fly down to snatch bits of cat food. Even Mel, who knows better, halfway tries to go thru the window. The little gray bird has no fear, it must know they can not go thru the glass.

Wow on your itty bitty number of bookmarks. (SATIRE there)! Mine must be over a hundred but have refrained from counting. I had a zillion on AR but their new format drives me bonkers. It has been a while since I even looked. The Christmas bazaar does sound interesting. A bit far for me to commute, but interesting.

Wayne said it was a damp, cold trip to let the chickens out. He wants to get some more next spring. And a rooster.

Last night we planned on having a celebratory glass of wine for getting his deer. So I put it in the freezer, intending to take it out after supper. We had a fire call for a small (2 room) house in a rent-to-own area and forgot about the wine.

No electricity or running water in the house. The dispatcher said there was a series of small explosions. Probably from propane bottles. The only bridge is an old railroad car that has come off the supports, only the brush trucks can go over safely...even our small fire trucks are too heavy. The house was one of the better ones and the people were trying so hard to make a go of their five acres. I worry about their pets, did they survive? It started raining so that helped control the grass fire that started from the blaze. Two fire departments sent brush trucks and a pumper.

When we got home we opened the wine. Suffice it to say it was well frozen and popped that cork right out--it was a sparkling wine so I had a bit of a disaster in the kitchen. Fortunately the sink captured most of the mini-mess. Bwahahaha.

Wayne had dropped his cell phone (UGH) near where he field dressed the deer and we were on our way out to look when the radios went off. So it was pitch dark and raining when we got back. He found it and It still works, really got to like those Otter Box cases for iPhones.

It is now snowing enough to just turn the ground white. No accumulation expected but the first snow of the season is always fun. Wayne will likely go out this afternoon to see if he can spot the elusive buck. His buddy got an eight point buck yesterday, so he is really happy. Muzzleloader season starts in December so he can try to get another one, I have a black powder rifle so may even go with him.

The freezer can accomodate more venison. It WILL be rearranged and / or defrosted. (GRIN). I will be trying to use up everything else and a very large sack of venison is going to ou daughter, we had some left over from last year and I will also send some of this year's. It lasts a long time when frozen.

Mauser has arrived on my lap. Trouble also gave up bird watching and is calling her littermate. So I will end the novel or essay or whatever, and finish my second cup of coffee. Have a good day, everyone.

    Good morning:)

Janet, I believe they filmed some of the movie "Bridge of Spies" at Beale Air Force Base in Marysville, CA. Rick was stationed there in the 80's..we want to see that one as well! We're big Tom Hanks fans..he's just awesome:)
LOL at all of our bookmarks:) I seem to always make the same recipes over and over again:)

Karen, I had no idea doe's were legal anywhere! Only bucks are in in California..I'm so happy you all have a freezer full of venison..nothing like a freezer full of food:)
Oh dear on the frozen wine! that's what happens when you get a fire call!
Cool on the snow:) I'm STILL dreaming of a White Christmas! maybe this will be the year:)

We're headed to breakfast then Costco..I need to get my turkey today as well..if I get a 20 lb bird, I believe it needs to defrost 4-5 days in the fridge..I remember it was totally defrosted a bit early last year but it stays good for a day or 2 in the fridge...Anyhoo, here come the annual Thanksgiving questions from me:) Do you think if I bought a 20 lb turkey today and put it in the fridge it would be ready to go on Thanksgiving morning? Or is Saturday a day too early? I really hate being indecisive every year about defrosting my big old turkey....I'm such a weird-o:)

    Dinner?

Hi Joce..are you getting any snow?

Hi Michelle, I saw where you informed RJ about Keni..he's such a sweetheart, and I know he was deeply saddened by the news..I can't believe it's been almost 2 years...sure do miss her..we all do... Thanks for letting him know sweetie....

Wendy, so good to see you pop in! Come by anytime:)

    Tina?

Bren, I believe GS Cookies were $5 a box last year..for some reason I thought they were $6..I know there are some recipes for GS cookies here..but I have never tried making any.

Well a big hello to everyone, I need to get a shower and head out! I'll check back in later..have a lovely day:)

    Hi Marie.
Does are legal in MO. I would prefer a later season because of having to worry about the fawns -- even tho the "experts" say fawns are able to fend for themselves at that age. Most of big trophy hunters around here are looking for the big bucks, some don't even try to get a doe and give most of the meat from their deer to others. That is why we have a lot of venison and have only one deer....a friend of a friend loves to hunt and is happy to share in the wealth. I think the overpopulation of deer has led to the does being legal.

I would probably wait until tomorrow to defrost such a big turkey. Don't blame you for worrying and there is such conflicting info out there. But don't get on the stuffing- no stuffing debate. Mine will be inside the bird just like my ancestors did. Our daughter will fix two, one inside to placate her momma and one outside to placate my legalistic GS.

It turns out my youngest GS knew the little girl who died and is of course upset. He decided that God needed another angel to care for all the animals who go to Rainbow Bridge, he is not your typical eleven year old, thinks long and deep about things. He wants to go to the funeral. He said they always talked in the halls and it is really the first experience with death of a friend.

My banana bread is almost done so better go check on it. Have a nice day.

That's funny the bird was after the cat food Karen! Do the chickens get let out year round? That's awful about the fire. Good that Wayne managed to find his phone! How many deer is each person allowed to get each year? We have a limit here I know although I'd have to look it up.
That's very cool info on the Bridge of Spies film location Marie. We decided to go to see it one day when the weather is bad so passed on it for today. I'm pleased you told me this before I saw it though so I can watch for it. :) Both of us are big Tom Hanks fans as well. I always buy a small turkey and always thaw it for a day in the fridge and then take it out to finish thawing on the counter. I checked a website for you out of curiosity and it says a 20 lb. turkey takes 5 days to thaw in the fridge. Have a fun shop at Costco!
I do my dressing inside the turkey as well Karen. It gets all the yummy turkey juice absorbed into it that way and I've been eating it like that for 55 years and had no bad things happen, so......:) That's sad that your GS knew the little girl who passed away. Death is a big subject and hard to get one's mind around for the majority of us nevermind an 11 year old. Yum on banana bread. Throw me a slice please. :)
Had a fun shop in town. The Russian Christmas Bazaar was hopping. They were selling food items plus they had tables set up if you wanted to buy lunch there as well. They were all sold out of cabbage rolls. We bought this amazing carrot salad. It tastes very garlicky. Also got a tub of sauerkraut with sausage and bacon in it and a tub of balsamic marinated beets.
Then we popped into a little Indian Grocery store that we like and I got a jar of Korma paste and another jar of a curry paste I've never tried before, two veggie samosas, a pkg. of pappadums, tamarind and some Indian spiced peanuts.
Love living in an area that has such eclectic food offerings. :)
Gonna head outside and chop up my Halloween pumpkins for the deer and I may even go collect tree boughs and make up some decorated Christmas boughs for the front doors and gates.

What a lot of fun that was! You know, cutting boughs and tromping about in the woods to collect things to decorate for Christmas is one of my very favourite things. I didn't put anything together yet.....just gathered a ton of pine, spruce, and cedar boughs and for the first time I also cut some wild juniper? branches. They're very prickly but they look really funky and I think it'll really add to the displays. I always make up bough arrangements for the front doors and front gates, one for the hot tub and then I decorate three flower barrels/pots with boughs and Christmas decorations as well. Jim told me it was supposed to rain or snow tomorrow so now I have everything collected I can do the 'putting together' tomorrow.
Forgot to say what I was doing for dinner.....Lobster Bisque, BBQ Rib eye, the carrot salad I bought from the Russian bazaar and maybe some edamame. Again, I could do the stuffed mushroom caps. Hmmmm.....we'll see how much steam I have.

The banana bread was good but a bit lacking in sweetness si instead of taking a loaf to the parents of the little girl, I will bring a veggie tray and a jar of hot pepper honey mustard that I canned. It makes a good dip for veggies or chicken tenders.

Wayne is in the blind at the bottom of the field, I heard shots but they were likely from the forest, last weekend in deer season. He would have buzzed me the two way radio if he had gotten one.

The bazaar sounds good. I love cabbage rolls. Wayne doesn't like them, so I don't make them.

Unless weather is severe, we let chickens out into their yard all year. They love the outdoors and it is good for them.

    Have a nice day!

Karen, the hot pepper honey mustard sounds delicious..that was very thoughtful of you to take that with a veggie tray to the little girl's parents. I hope they are doing ok..but how could you be? I cannot get over how sad of a situation this is. praying for them...

I think that's so great your chickies get to roam around..they love that!

That's great you got your turkey Marie.
I'd like to see chickens strutting about in the snow Karen. :)
Went out for a hot tub. Felt good. Lobster bisque is almost done. I'll post the recipe tomorrow. Jim's going to grill the ribeye.

    Evening everyone.
That's great that you were able to sleep in Janet, I did too. No construction crews showed up.
LOL about the number of recipes. I have just under 250 and started cleaning out those that I know that I will not make today. I am such a control freak.
The asparagus is with pumpkin and sunflower seeds, just a splash of toasted sesame oil.
I found a great deal on salmon, 2.99 a pound so I bought 10 pounds. We both love salmon. Cauliflower was 4.99 a head, asparagus was 5.99. I really wanted some sea bass but it was 27.99 per pound, way out of price range.
Wow, Karen. That's not a lot of recipes. I try not to add any that I won't make but your doing much better than I am.
So sorry about the fire and the wine. I've been living in the city for so long that it's hard to remember what is like in a rural setting. I do remember chasing a bull for 10 miles at 2 in the morning though. I can laugh now but I didn't at the time. That was one stubborn bull.

No Marie, your not weird. I do the same thing every time that I defrost a turkey. Questions galore, will it be defrosted, will it be ready in time, will it be dry.... Lol it usually isn't dry, or on time but it does usually defrost on time.
Good for you Janet, being able to cut your boughs. There's a park near us where we can do the same. So fresh and they last so much longer.
Yes, the hot pepper jelly sounds so good. How very sad for her parents.
Oh Marie, I spent a few hours making sea food stock. I have about 10 cups and I was looking for a recipe to use the stock in. I am so looking forward to your recipe.

I am off to watch something on the idiot box as my Mom always called it. Have a great evening all.
