Have you tried marshmallow fondant? You can use it to cover your cakes, but not for decorations. It tastes a lot better to most people, especially of the kid variety. :)

Recipe - Double for two layer cake.
8 oz. mini marshmallows (either Walmart brand or Albertsons not jet puff)
1 tbls. Crisco put in microwave bowl first, then the marshmallows
1 lb. sifted (if you buy C&H in the 2 lb. bag, it's presifted) powdered sugar

Melt marshmallows and Crisco in the microwave in 20 to 30 second increments until there are no visible shapes, stirring in between each heating segment. Be careful not to burn it. I use a silicon spoon to stir, it makes clean up easier. Once the marshmallows have melted, pour onto an appropriate surface where you can knead in the powdered sugar. Be sure the surface is dusted with powdered sugar and work as much of the sugar in as needed to get the right consistency. If it gets too dry or you over work it, just add in a little more Crisco. This should be used immediately. If you color it, and it's going to sit, the color will fade, or it did with Wilton colors.
I've heard that it will freeze with the WalMart marshmallows, but I haven't tried it.
