What are your secrets to dining out as a vegan or vegetarian?

Don't be afraid to ask the waiter to substitute. I always can get almost any dish without meat, I just ask. If they can't do it, they will tell you. If you are looking for a vegan or vegetarian speciality place to eat try www.happycow.net.

Thank you for the web page.
Funny thing I went to a web page that listed vegan restaurants and they had Burger King listed.
Apparently any place with a salad can be listed as vegan.

well, burger king also has the veggie burger. the bun isn't vegan though (so I've heard). The fries are also veg friendly.

If you eat cheese almost anyplace will have some kind of cheese and bread/pasta/potato dish. Quesidilla, grilled cheese, cheese ravioli, etc. Sometimes the appetizer section can have your best choices of meatless fare.

I used to go to a steakhouse with my ex and his friend and his friends fiance. I liked it because we always got this server who was also veg so she would tell me what was ok and what wasn't.

I like the steakhouse story. It always helps to have a buddy who can help out, you know? My husband and daughter love steak and I .... can't even talk about it. But we go to Black Angus and I can order the baked potato soup. They serve you awesome bread with your meal. I no longer hate it when they are craving cow flesh.

Oh, I forgot to add that they put bacon as a garnish on the soup. You have to ask that they leave that off.
