Schnitz Pie Recipe
This is an Amish recipe. For those of you who don't live near the Amish, schnitz is dried apples.

Ingredients
  • 1 lb. dried tart apples
  • 1 orange, peel and juice
  • 2 T. cinnamon
  • 2 c. sugar
  • 3 c. water
  • 2 9-inch pie crusts (one for the bottom and one for the top)

Directions
  1. Cover the dried apples with the water and cook over medium heat to a pulp. Add cinnamon, sugar, orange juice and grated peel, mix, and let cool.
  2. Preheat oven to 450.
  3. Fill the pastry with the schnitz mixture, Cover with the pastry, crimp edges, and cut several slits in the top. Bake for 10 minutes, then reduce the heat to 350 and bake for another 30 minutes, until the crust is nice and brown.

Reminds me of a pie I once made called "Funeral Pie," but that called for raisins instead of dried apple.
