How to make it

  • Butter baking dish and line with whole vanilla wafers
  • Soak gelatin in water
  • Scald milk , combine sugar, salt and cornstarch and stir into hot milk
  • Beat egg yokes and slowly add milk mixture (slow so eggs dont cook)
  • Return to pan and cook over hot (not boiling) water until thick and it coats a spoon
  • Remove from heat, add gelatin and cool
  • Beat egg whites with a scant 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cream of tarter, and 1 tsp vanilla
  • Fold into cooled milk mixture and pour into the baking dish with the vanilla wafers (13x9x2)
  • Chill overnight
  • next day cover with cool whip and coconut and return to refrigerator until served
