From modelsmom 14 years agoIngredients
- 1/4 cup heavy cream or whipping cream shopping list
- 1/2 cup milk (lowfat is fine) shopping list
- 2 tablespoons sugar shopping list
- 1/4 cup butter, divided shopping list
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract shopping list
- Pinch kosher salt shopping list
- 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate shopping list
- 2 eggs shopping list
- 6 slices white bread, crusts removed and cut into triangles shopping list
- 1/4 cup cream, for whipping (optional) shopping list
- ice cream (optional) shopping list
How to make it
- In a small saucepan, heat 1/4 cup cream, milk, sugar, 3 tablespoons butter, vanilla, and salt, and bring to a simmer (don't let it boil!).
- Put the chocolate into a medium bowl or large measuring jug and pour in the cream mixture.
- Let sit until the chocolate is melted, about 5 minutes.
- Add the eggs and mix until well combined.
- Grease a 9x13 baking dish generously with the remaining tablespoon of butter, and line it with the bread slices, overlapping slightly.
- Pour the chocolate mixture over the bread, making sure to cover the tips. If necessary, push the bread down with your fingers to coat the bread completely.
- Refrigerate, covered, for at least 2 hours.
- Remove from the refrigerator 30 minutes before baking.
- Preheat the oven to 375°.
- Bake until the custard sets and the bread turns golden at the edges, about 30 minutes (check after 20 minutes! It's easy to overcook this.)
- If serving with whipped cream, chill both the bowl and the whisk in the freezer first, to cut whipping time in half.
