How to make it

  • Pour boiling water over oats & oleo & mix.. Let stand 20 minutes.
  • Then add brown sugar, soda, eggs, cinnamon, flour and sugar to the oats & oleo. Mix well.
  • Grease (use shortening) & flour a 9x13 pan. Pour batter into pan and bake about 30 minutes @ 350 degrees (325 if using a glass pan)
  • When cake is done mix in order:
  • Brown sugar, oleo, coconut, pecans, canned milk and vanilla. Top cake with icing and return to oven and broil until icing bubbles up and is slightly brown

    My mom used to use the word "oleo". I doubt my kids would even know what that means.

    Of course I would gravitate to this recipe.
    Thank-you for this wonderful cake...
    ~and~
    the flash back memory...
    for my Step-Mother use to make a cake with this same Icing (what she would call,burnt icing)She would put it under the broiler for a few seconds and the tips of some of the coconut would be toasted,and the other caramelized.
