How to make it

  • First, it is important to wash your lentils.
  • To wash, add them to a bowl and add water and stir the lentils around with your hands. You will notice the water change colour. Do this a few times with fresh water until water is pretty clear.
  • Although many people will tell you that you don't need to soak lentils overnight (and technically they are right), many people, myself included, find that after eating non-soaked lentils you need to make more toilet stops - not diarrhea or anything that dramatic just more pit stops.
  • In a medium soup pot, saute the onion until translucent.
  • Add garlic and jalapeno (or replacement spice) and saute for another couple of minutes.
  • Next add lentils, tumeric, cumin, salt, ginger and broth.
  • Bring to the boil then reduce heat, cover and simmer for 15 minutes or until lentils are tender.
  • Add tomatoes and cilantro and cover with a lid and remove from the heat.
  • Let stand for two to three minutes before serving.

    I never put my lentil soups in a blender either - not because I don't have one, but because my mum always skipped that step while I was growing up. I prefer a more interesting texture. :) It looks absolutely delicious.
