How to make it

  • Dissolve yeast in a large bowl with warm water
  • Add sugar, salt and oil
  • Slowly add 2 cups flour and beat until dough holds shape
  • add a bit more flour if dough is too sticky
  • Turn onto lightly floured surface and knead until smooth
  • Place in large greased bowl. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled (1 hr - 1 1/2 hours)
  • Punch down, put back in bow and allow to double again (30 min)
  • Preheat oven to 375 F
  • Move to lightly floured surface and shape dough into a long, thin loaf (about 14" x 2")
  • Put loaf on slightly greased parchment paper
  • Cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise another 20 minutes
  • Beat together egg whites and water and brush over loaf
  • Cut slits on top of loaf
  • Bake for 20- 30 min or until golden brown
  • Brush with butter while warm
  • Cool a bit on a rack, serve warm
  • Enjoy!

    I found it would be better to use a whole wheat BREAD flour- it makes the dough rise much better
