How to make it

  • In a heavy bottomed saucepan, gently heat the butter, water and vinegar until the butter has melted
  • Add the sugar and treacle and gently allow to fully dissolve. This takes about 20 minutes
  • Boil the mixture - supposedly to a temperature of 138 degrees Celsius but I don't have a thermometer and it isn't that fussy.
  • Pour the mixture into a well greased, 7 inch sandwich tin
  • Allow to cool a little, then mark the surface into squares with a knife
  • When cold, break into pieces and store in an airtight container.
