How to make it

  • 1. In a bowl, combine the flour, sugar and baking soda.
  • 2. In a 2 1/2 quart saucepan, combine the butter, water and cocoa. Bring to a boil. Remove from heat.
  • 3. Add to flour mixture, buttermilk, eggs and vanilla.
  • 4. With hand mixer, beat 2 minutesat a medium speed.
  • 5. Pour into a lightly buttered 13-by-9-inch cake pan.
  • 6. Bake at 375F for 25 to 30 minutes or until the cake tests done. Cool.
  • 7. To prepare the frosting, in a large bowl, cream butter until light and fluffy. Gradually add the sugar, beating well after each addition. Add vanilla and milk, beating until light.
  • 8. Spread frosting over the cake. Garnish with chopped walnuts or pecans , if desired.
