How to make it

  • Sift the dry ingredients except the sugar
  • In separate bowl, combine the dried fruit and nuts
  • Cream the butter and sugar till fluffy
  • Add and beat in the eggs
  • Beat together in additions along with the applesauce the wet and dry ingredients.
  • Stir in the fruit and nuts
  • Grease and flour a 10 inch tube pan very well
  • Pour in the batter and spread in pan evenly
  • Bake in a preheated 300F oven about 1 1/2 hours or tested done in center with a toothpick
  • Cool cake in pan
  • Meanwhile make frosting
  • Bring butter in a saucepan over low heat until melted
  • Stir in the 1 cup of brown sugar
  • Raise heat and bring to a boil for 2 minutes
  • Then add milk stir well and return to a boil and remove from heat
  • Let cool 5 minutes
  • Beat in vanilla and powdered sugar till a frosting consistency
  • Spread this over the cooled cake
