Homemade Laundry Detergent Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1 bar (or 4.5 ounces) of shaved bar soap (Since I have sensitive skin, I use Ivory, but you could use ZOTE, Fels-Naptha, or your own soap if you like.) shopping list
  • 1 cup of 20 Mule Team borax shopping list
  • 1 cup of Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda shopping list
  • 2.5 cups of OxiClean Versatile Stain Remover Powder (Free) shopping list

How to make it

  • Grate bar of soap with a cheese grater (the finer the better).
  • Thoroughly stir soap, borax, and washing soda together for 5 minutes.
  • Add OxiClean Free and stir well.
  • Add 2 tablespoons to 1/4 cup to each load.
  • Add 1/2 cup vinegar to fabric softener dispenser.

    Found a recipe that was even better than my own at http://senselesshousewife.blogspot.com/2009/01/laundry-soap-research.html.
    (Modified slightly for my own use.)

    2 cups grated soap (Dr. Bronner's, Ivory, ZOTE, Fels-Naptha, or any non-lotion soap you have on hand)
    2 cups 20 Mule Team borax
    2 cups Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda
    2 cups OxiClean
    1 cup Arm & Hammer baking soda
    1/2 cup citric acid (optional - for hard water users)

    Thank you Pointsevenout. You are very correct about microwaving the bar of soap. Put the soap on a large microwave safe plate, and microwave it 10-20 seconds at a time. Great big huge wads of foam will come up from the soap, just use a spoon to scoop that into your container of laundry soap.

    One other note, if you can't find the 4.5 oz bars of soap, you can double the rest of the recipe, but use 3 (3 oz) bars of soap. This will make up 2.55 quarts. I store it in a gallon size pitcher.

    If you melt the bar of soap in the microwave it will powder up better than grating. Also put a few drops of essential oils in the powders for a nicely scented wash. I use mint, orange and lavender.
    Do not use soap with lotion in it.
