Ingredients
  • 1 package yeast,(3 teaspoons) check the date for freshness!!
  • 1 ½ cup warm water, this should be very warm not scalding
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4-5 cups flour & 2 tablespoon brown sugar mixed in (optional)
  • Pretzel salt, butter, cinnamon sugar, garlic powder what ever topping flavoring your want or combination.

Directions
  1. In large bowl combine water add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 tablespoon sugar, and then add the yeast and let sit and proof 5-10 minutes(if this does not bubble up your yeast is no good).
  2. After 5-10 minutes stir in the flour. Knead by hand for 5 to 8 minutes, but I use my kitchen aid mixer with the kneading hook, still knead for the same time. (If dough is to sticky slowly add more flour & when you get good at this you can experiment with different flours…not self rising girls and guys
  3. Then shape into pretzels: Long rope then twist. Place on greased foil lined pan. Let rise for 15 minutes. At this point you can freeze the pretzels they will stack nicely and pop in the oven for a quick snack and follow recipe below to bake. Or continue baking them as follows if not freezing:
  4. Preheat to 425 bake for 5 to 10 minutes
  5. In a nice size fry pan fill it with 2 cups water and add 2 tablespoons of water bring to a boil. Lower pretzel into boiling water for 40 seconds and drain place on greased foil lined pan . When panned place on pretzel salt.
  6. If you are doing garlic salt or cinnamon sugar do not add salt bake plain
  7. When they come out of the oven rub with butter and then add cinnamon sugar or garlic salt.
  8. If you want to make cinnamon raisin pretzels add raisins to pretzel mix and make a glaze by 1 tablespoon sweet butter smooth paste slowly add cup 10x sugar and keep adding milk or water or OJ ever flavor little spoon full at a time and glaze.
  9. These are delicious
  10. The flour I used was occidental flour. You can use any flour. Be sure if using wheat use less.
  11. Another thing even after my salt pretzels I still rubbed on butter on the warm pretzels...mmmm

What is occidental flour? I have a pretzel loving hubby and to make real soft pretzels for his Super Bowl party would make me "wife of the year." Thanks for the post.

This looks great. I think ill try it!

Thanks you for this recipe! My kids LOVE pretzels from the mall and they said these are even better. They are also cheap to make, I barely found this recipe 2 weeks ago but already have made them 4 times! They will be a new family tradition!

Thanks for the recipe! I've always wanted to make my own pretzels!

This was awesome!!! I just got done making them...1st - fun fun fun!! brought back a GREAT childhood memory of going to the pretzel factory in Lititz, PA!! 2nd - kneading and rolling out the dough was a great stress relief today; since my 2.5 year old has learned HE has the word "no!" in his vocabulary! LOL

We love this recipe wraped around a hot dog and baked as stated in the above recipe the kid's cant get enough. thanks

You are joking if you call this a recipe. 4 or 5 cups of flour?! Ha Ha! Typos. Not logically written up and just plain confusing in parts.
