How to make it

  • Place the shredded cabbage in a pot
  • Cover completely with boiling water
  • Stir in the vinegar and salt ( prevents the color from fading )
  • Cover the pot
  • Let sit covered at least 5-minutes ( this will soften the cabbage and yet leave it with some texture and crunch)
  • Drain mixture well
  • Stir in the lemon and salad oil, adding equal amounts if more is needed for your taste
  • Stir in the grated apple and onion if desired
  • Season with sugar/sweetener to taste and salt and pepper
  • Chill well
  • Note: my mom never used mayo in this recipe but I discovered I like the creamy texture of its addition.
