Ingredients

How to make it

  • Put the flour in a bowl, Cut the shortening in
  • And the rest except the topping and mixed together.
  • Pour into a greased or sprayed loaf pan lined with parchment paper and bake at 325° for 45 minutes.
  • Poke tiny holes in the loaf and then
  • Mix the lemon juice and sugar together and pour over the loaf when finished baking.
  • Leave the loaf in the pan for 15 to 20 minutes then put on wire rack to finish cooling
  • FOOTNOTES
  • I use lactose-free milk in this, it stays fresh for 4 to 5 days if wrapped well. It freezes very well also. I put six servings but it depends how thick the slices or cut. You can also put some lemon zest in the batter, those that have made this said this is what they did and it worked out well. Some have poked holes in the loaf as to allow the lemon to go through

Loved this recipe! I used buttermilk instead of milk and I added the zest of a lemon. I made three 3" x 5" loaves verses one loaf. It is a definite keeper! I Made It

Good stuff! I juiced 1/2 lemon to the mix and 2 tsp. of poppy seeds. I had to cook it for 1hr. 5 min. It was still uncooked at 45 min. for me. But all my loaf recipes are that way. Definitely a keeper. And I will make mini loaves next time. TY Eastcoaster! (pic added too)

question...would you substitute some milk for the lemon you add? we love lemon! I would like to add more lemon and poppyseeds to this. Nevermind. I think I answered my own questions. I will take the tips from the footnotes! Thanks. Will probably make this weekend.

This is very nice. I make this gluten free. I used butter with no problems and add some lemon juice with the milk. It is a very versatile recipe. Thanks for sharing it with us.
