Braised Beef With Garlic Mashed Potatoes

- 1 ¼ pounds blade or cross rib steak, cut into four portions shopping list
- Salt and pepper, to taste shopping list
- 1/3 cup flour shopping list
- 2 Tbs olive oil shopping list
- 2 garlic cloves, minced shopping list
- 2 med. onions, halved and sliced shopping list
- ½ tsp dried thyme shopping list
- 2 cups (500 ml) low sodium beef stock shopping list
- ¼ cup dry red wine optional shopping list
- For the potatoes 2 ½ pounds baking potatoes, peeled and halved shopping list
- 4-6 sliced garlic cloves shopping list
- ¾ cup milk shopping list
- 2 Tbs melted butter shopping list
- salt and pepper to taste shopping list
How to make it
- Preheat oven to 325%. Season the beef with salt and pepper, and then coat with flour, shaking off excess. Reserve the excess flour.
- Heat oil in a skillet set over med. high heat. Add steak portions and brown on both sides Transfer to a casserole. Add garlic and onions to the skillet and cook for 3 to 4 minutes. Stir in thyme and 3 tbs of the reserved flour until well combined. Slowly pour in, stirring constantly, the beef stock and wine if using. Bring to a simmer. Season to taste, and then pour over the steaks. Cover and cook in the oven 90 minutes or until very tender.
- 30 minutes before the meat is done,gently boil the potatoes and garlic until tender. drain well and thoroughly mash. Whip in the remaining ingredients until combined and mixture is smooth.
- Serve steaks on a bed of mashed potatoes. Spoon over pan juices and serve.
