How to make it

  • Peel, core, and quarter apples.
  • Put into a saucepan with a little water. Bring to a gentle simmer on medium heat and cook for 20-30 minutes until apples are soft, stirring occasionally.
  • Delicious plain, or served over potato pancakes, or baked into quickbreads , or . . . the possibilities are endless.

    That's exactly right; any kind of apple will make a good applesauce. If you are using it for something where you want a nice tartness, then go for a tarter apple; a blend works fine too. If you just want applesauce and aren't fussy, use the apples you have!

    scrumptious ate it and said...
    Oh yum! I made this last night with a bag of supercheap organic apples from my superpricey neighborhood organic market. I cut the apples into slightly smaller pieces and left the skins on about half of them for fiber and vitaminy goodness. I don't think I've ever made applesauce before - I'm impressed at how sweet and rich it tastes without adding anything to the apples at all!
