How to make it

  • Wash and soak rice and toovar dal in a big bowl (in 4 cups water) and set aside. Usually 10 minutes is maximum you will need.
  • Dice all vegetables and set aside.
  • In a medium/large sized pressure cooker, heat the oil.
  • Add jeera, and when it sizzles, add asaefoetida.
  • Add sliced jalapenos and garlic. Let them sizzle (~1-2 minutes).
  • Add onions and cook them for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add potatoes and rest of the veggies.
  • Cook for 4-5 minutes and add the spices (all the condiments).
  • Let them heat up with the rest of the veggies.
  • Add the rice and toovar dal without water.
  • Now add 6 cups of water and bring to a boil.
  • Cover the lid, put on the whistle and let it whistle 4 times (4 whole ones).
  • Let it cool and mix the khichdi.
  • You are in for a treat.
  • Serve with fresh yogurt (sweet or salted).
