Ingredients

How to make it

  • Mix sugar, cornstarch, salt, and cocoa in a medium sauce pan.
  • Whisk in the water.
  • Slowly heat over medium until it gets thick and starts to boil.
  • Boil for 1-2 minutes. (Make sure you don’t boil too long, or it will set like taffy.)
  • Remove from heat and stir in oil and vanilla.
  • Cool and spread on cooled cake.
  • Enjoy!

Not a good tasting chocolate frosting. Good consistency, but taste like chocolate pudding. There isn't any true chocolatey taste to it. Not very happy.

Wow! I could not imagine that vegan frosting would taste so good! :) At first I was sceptical about trying the recipe based on the combination of ingredients. Now I regret not trying it sooner. lol. Btw you may find it useful to whisk the mixture while it heats up. It will thicken quickly. No need to wait until it bubbles otherwise you might end up with lumps.

Would you be able to whip this frosting once it cools? I am looking for something a bit more airy than can be piped.

This is awesome! You really have to watch it on the stove, but it tastes great!

I just tried this recipe and used white flour instead of corn starch because my sister is avoiding corn, and it still tastes wonderful! It did thicken on the bottom really fast, so you have to stir constantly if you use the flour. I'm not sure I even got it all the way to boiling before it thickened.

I just tried thie recipe and it is very creamy,
rich and fudgy! Just added an extra 1/2 teaspoon
vanilla and a dash of cinnamon. The cinnamon
brings out the chocolate flavor even more! This
    is a keeper!

I absolutely loved this recipe. Vegan cake is usually pretty bland, but this definitely made the entire dessert worthwhile

    lizlizlizliz:
Mine thickened in an instant as well, but I just quickly stirred and removed it from the heat to keep a smooth consistency. If you know your elements get hotter than others, or heat up more quickly, don't boil this for more than 40 seconds! I also constantly stirred my frosting with a whisk.
    This is delicious frosting!

you just bolied it for too long!! i brought it up to a boil on medium heat. it takes patience but you don't have to worry about it burning. once boiling i counted to 50 and took it off the heat til it stopped bubbling. this is actually an awesome recipe. the icing is super fudgey.

Mine never boiled, just thickened slightly right before it suddenly turned into a sticky chocolate blob before my eyes. don't know what went wrong, but i wasted my ingredients and my time!
