  • This turned out great! I had never made spelt bread and, after searching the net, I discovered that it's supposed to be difficult to make come out right. This came out in my bread machine better than the white and wheat recipes I'd used. I used the "Quick" setting, which had 2 risings, instead of the "Basic" setting, which had 3 risings in order to cut down on kneading. Delicious!

Excellent recipe!!! Thank you! I don't have a breadmaker but I easily adapted the recipe to the regular method. I used the ingredients exactly as listed, I put all the dry ingredients into a bowl, i added the wet ingredients gradually until it formed a dough ball, I scraped all the bits in and hardly kneaded it at all ... basically just worked the ingredients all together. I placed the dough in an oiled, big, Pyrex bowl with a lid in a weak, warm oven and let it rise for over an hour (was busy with something else so left it a bit long), punched the dough down lighty and placed it in a small loaf tin and baked it for an hour at 180 degrees C. It worked out really well and even my 2 year old ate several pieces of it very enthusiastically, demanding "more" regularly! Next I want to experiment with using 3 cups spelt and 1 cup organic plain flour. Yummy!

Thankyou for posting this the kids threw out my spelt recipe and I have been going mad trying to find one that didn't contain honey a major no no for my son.
You are a campion. I am adding it to the Fructose friendly group, and have made a note in adjustments regarding safe milk for people suffering this.
    Thankyou Coubay

Spelt is amazing. I'm sorry, I don't see where you mentioned that it could be eaten on a gluten-free diet.

Just an FYI - this bread recipe looks good -but spelt is not recommended for people who MUST maintain a strict gluten-free diet due to Celiac Sprue or Gluten Intolerance.
