How to make it

  • In a medium saucepan combine the sugar, molasses, shortening, and butter then bring to a boil. Reduce heat.
  • Cook and stir constantly for another 2 minutes.
  • Remove from the heat and cool for about 45 minutes.
  • To this add the egg, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, orange peel, salt, baking soda, cardamom and cloves and stir until well mixed.
  • Add the flour, one-third at a time, stirring well after each addition to form into a dough.
  • Divide the dough in half, form into two discs then refrigerate for at least 3 hours or until firm enough to roll.
  • Roll dough to 1/8 inch thickness and cut into gingerbread people or whatever shape you desire.
  • Bake in a 375 degree oven for 4-5 minutes or until the edges are browned slightly. Cool.
  • Ice, if you like, with a powdered sugar icing.
  • Makes about 4 dozen depending on size of cutters.

Wow! This has been mentioned on the soap ATWT in recent months and I thought it would be a dinner meal by the name ha! I am not a baker but I might try to make these. I don't like Ginger Snaps as someone compared them to but others say these are really delicious! Wish me luck! Thanks!

We usually get these store-bought for Christmas Eve - now I can make them myself! Thanks!
