I tried this way of cooking asparagus for the first time(other than the "traditional")and wow!!! In a bit of a time crunch, I steamed the asparagus first (about 5 minutes). I added lemon into the water with some spices of choice (get creative). Then made a tin foil pouch - added a heaping spoonful of margarine/butter along with some onion powder, garlic powder and fresh ground sea salt. Put onto the grill in pouch for about 5 minutes or until you notice the sizzle from the butter. Gently take spears out of pouch and put them onto the grill. Watching them as to not to let them burn through totally. Grill for approx. 5-10 minutes (depending on the heat) or to desired "look". Some "hot spots" will occur, but the taste is sweet and nutty. Very fresh...was a pleasant surprise!!

I just finished eating dinner, and I had made this side-dish to go with it. It is *INCREDIBLE*!
1 tip - if using a gas grill, make sure you watch the asparagus closely. Mine came out a little too done for my taste, but was still good. I'd say to grill for about 3-4 minutes, depending on if you grill in an aluminum pouch like mslequil suggested (which I did).
Also, the whole meal that I served this with was a home-made salad (Iceburg Lettuce & Red Cabbage leaves, mushrooms, shredded carrot & medium sharp chedder cheese, and Honey Mustard Dijon Salad Dressing), Organic Roasted Red Bell Pepper & Tomato Soup, steamed sweet white corn (on the cob), and grilled T-Bone steak (rubbed on spices: Omaha Steak Seasoning, Durkee's California Garlic Powder, McCormicks BBQ spice, Durkee's Hickory Powder, Onion Powder, and Spice Islands': Basil, Oregano, Grounded Sage & Cilantro; using extra virgin olive oil to make it stick...sorry, I don't have any fresh spices right now). The Grilled Asparagus here went perfect with it.
