Ingredients
  • 1 cup regular rice
  • 1 cup spaghetti, broken into 1/2" pieces
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2-3 tablespoons chicken bouillon
  • 3-1/2 cups water
  • Parsley flakes, dash (to taste)

Directions
  1. Cook rice and spaghetti in plenty of water on stovetop until tender.
  2. Drain.
  3. Melt butter in kettle.
  4. Brown rice and spaghetti in butter.
  5. Add 3-1/2 cups water, bouillon and parsley flakes.
  6. Simmer 30 minutes.

This is such a good idea... I purchase low salt soup base ... I love rice a roni...Also a lot better for kids.. Let me know how yours turns out with the extra stuff added!

Okay, Here's what I ended up doing. I took 2 or 3 T veg. oil and made like I was making the rice-a-roni from the box. I sauteed the rice and the noodles till they started to brown, then I added one small diced onion, and 1 T prepared, minced garlic. When the onions were clear I added the 3 1/2 C water, the bullion, and the parsley. Brought it to a boil, ended up adding some minced frozen carrots (about 1/2 C)instead of frozen corn, returned it to boil, covered it, reduced it to a simmer and cooked for 30 min. I did had about 1/2 C water part way through. It turns out a little starchier than your commercial rice-a-roni, but I didn't have any leftovers so I guess my kids didn't mind.


Very frugal and quite yummy!
