Creamed Ground Beef S O S Recipe

Creamed Ground Beef S O S Recipe
I loved it when Mom used to make this for us! I have no idea if she originally made it for Dad, who had been in the army, or if she just liked it because it tasted good and was a budget stretcher. A traditional favorite, good ol' SOS. Note: the title... More

Ingredients
  • 1 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/4 cup chopped onions
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon granulated beef bouillon
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt, to taste
  • fresh ground black pepper, to taste
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder or granulated garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder or granulated onion (optional)
  • cayenne powder, to taste
  • 1/2 teaspoon worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/4 cups milk

Directions
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and onion.
  2. Stir in the flour, granulated bouillon, salt, pepper, and garlic and onion powders (and cayenne, if using).
  3. Saute all together until flour is absorbed, about 5 minutes.
  4. Gradually stir in the Worcestershire sauce and milk.
  5. Bring it all to a simmer, stirring, and cook until thickened, about 5 to 10 minutes.
  6. Serve over toast, biscuits, noodles, rice, or potatoes.
  7. Note: when I'm needing to avoid bread or noodles, I'll sometimes make a bunch of sauteed mushrooms and eat this over them, or sometimes with tofu. Delicious!

I've always loved SOS. Thanks for the post!

Yep on a shingle. This stuff is great. Brings back fond memories of extremely rare culinary adventures in that line of work.

We always called ours hamburger gravy. SOS was creamed beef or chipped beef. We ate ours on potatoes thanks for the recipe. Love this.

OMG! This was one of my favorite dishes for breakfast as a kid! My ARMY cook dad made this frequently as he served it over toast with a fried egg on top! I can't wait to try this again! I remember corn starch and evaporated milk iin the recipe, but flour and milk will do! What a treasure to find again! Thanks!

SOS in our family was chipped beef as well, however, in my husband's family (career military) SOS was ground beef
