Mesir Wat - Ethiopian Lentil Dish

- 1 cup dried red lentils shopping list
- 1 onion, chopped shopping list
- 1-3 cloves garlic, minced shopping list
- 1 small can tomato paste shopping list
- 2 cups vegetable broth or water shopping list
- 1 Tb paprika shopping list
- 1 ts ground ginger shopping list
- 1 ts turmeric shopping list
- 1 ts garam masala shopping list
- 1 Tb berbere OR an additional 1 Tb paprika OR 1 Tb cayenne pepper shopping list
- sea salt to taste shopping list
- ground black pepper to taste shopping list
- oil for frying shopping list
How to make it
- Soak lentils for at least an hour in water
- Drain and rinse and set aside
- Saute onions and garlic in oil until golden
- Add broth or water
- Add spices and tomato paste
- When gently boiling, add lentils
- Turn down heat and simmer until lentils are tender and it's a thick stew
- Serve with rice, Injera bread or pita bread

This is a terrific recipe. I omit the tomato paste and increase the garlic a bit. If you can't find it premade, berebere is easy to make yourself. I prefer to make a powder version rather than a paste version just because it's easier to store. Plu...more
