How to make it

  • Soak lentils for at least an hour in water
  • Drain and rinse and set aside
  • Saute onions and garlic in oil until golden
  • Add broth or water
  • Add spices and tomato paste
  • When gently boiling, add lentils
  • Turn down heat and simmer until lentils are tender and it's a thick stew
  • Serve with rice, Injera bread or pita bread

    This is a terrific recipe. I omit the tomato paste and increase the garlic a bit. If you can't find it premade, berebere is easy to make yourself. I prefer to make a powder version rather than a paste version just because it's easier to store. Plus, if you make it yourself you can adjust the heat level to your preference.
