Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups yellow split peas
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 Tbs. cumin seeds
  • 1/2 tsp.turmeric
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp. crushed hot pepper flakes

Directions
  1. wash peas in a sieve until water runs clear
  2. place in a medium pot with water and tumeric and bring to a boil
  3. lower heat as low as you can to retain a very slow simmer for 1 hour
  4. mash in the pot with a potato masher or use a immursion blender, to a smooth concistency
  5. add salt to taste and keep warm
  6. in a small skillet, heat oil over medium heat, add cumin and crushed pepper, cook for 3 minutes, careful not to burn
  7. stir oil and spice mix into soup and serve

Love split pea soup! I like the addition of cumin and tumeric. I have some ham, and this may be just what I will make! :)
