Finnish Meat Pies Recipe

An easy dish that can be served with soup and/or salad for dinner or alone (maybe with grapes) as a snack for later on. I made it for dinner when we had friends over and everyone loved them.

Ingredients
  • FILLING:
  • 1 lb. ground meat (I usually use lamb or beef)
  • 1 can of potatoes, (chop to small pieces before using)
  • 3 c. instant rice
  • 1/2 c. chopped onion
  • 2 cloves of fresh garlic, chopped
  • 1/4 c. chopped fresh parsley
  • 1 c. dill
  • CRUST:
  • 21/2 c. flour
  • 1/2 c. water
  • 1 stick of soft butter

Directions
  1. FILLING:
  2. Prepare instant rice as directed on box
  3. In a med/large fry pan, brown the meat on medium heat
  4. Drain grease
  5. Add chopped potatoes, onion, garlic, parsley and 1/2 c dill to the meat let it sit on medium heat, stir often.
  6. Stir the meat filling and rice together.
  7. Stir the rest of the 1/2 c. dill to the mixture.
  8. CRUST:
  9. Preheat oven to 375 Degrees.
  10. Mix 2 c. of flour and butter into a large bowl.
  11. Combine together until softly mixed.
  12. Add water to bowl
  13. Mix together til it looks more dough like.
  14. Roll into a ball
  15. On a clean flat surface spread a 1/2 c of flour.
  16. Roll out dough onto completely flat
  17. With a wide cup, cut crust into many circles (I usually get 24 circles)
  18. place each circle onto a baking sheet
  19. In each dough circle place some of the filling in the center.
  20. Fold and pinch each circle over the filling.
  21. Bake for 20min.

I think this is great, thanks so much. I didn't know that potatoes came in cans. I'm going to just chop my own up. The lamb sounds so good too.


My Finnish cousins called these Pasties and not the kind you stick to yourself. ;-)


Good recipe and canned potatoes arn't so bad..............
