Ingredients

How to make it

  • Cover cabbage leaves with boiling water and let stand about 10 minutes or until leaves are limp. Remove leaves and drain off excess water.
  • Mix ground beef, rice, onions, mushrooms with liquid, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and 1/2 cup of the tomato sauce.
  • Place about 1/3 cup of hamburger mixture at the stem of each cabbage leaf. Roll leaf around mixture, tucking in sides.
  • Place cabbage rolls seam sides down in an ungreased square baking dish.
  • Mix remaining tomato sauce, lemon juice, and sugar; pour over cabbage rolls. Cover and cook in oven at 350 degrees for approx 45 minutes or until ground beef is done.
  • Mix cornstarch and 1 tablespoon of water in saucepan. Drain liquid from cabbage roll pan and add to cornstarch mixture. Boil approx 1 minute, stirring constantly. Serve this sauce with cabbage rolls.
  • Garnish with parsley or shredded cheese if desired.

I've made this recipe several times and my family loves them!! I agree that the sauce needs to be doubled. I usually serve them with mashed potatoes. Great comfort food!!

yep this is a good one. It's the one I got out of Betty Crocker cookbook 30+ years. But I double the sauce and put a 1/4 of it in meat mixture also. That way there is extra in bottom of casserole when done to spoon over rolls. YUM YUM

My mom makes these and instead of boiling she put the whole cabbage in the microwave for several minutes and didn't make the extra dishes! Thanks for memories! Yum

This is a wonderful and apparently very traditional cabbage roll recipe. I usually just top my cabbage rolls with tomato sauce, however, your idea for using the pan drippings and cornstarch is great. I will have to try that next time I make these.
By the way, my better half likes a brown or mushroom gravy on his cabbage rolls so I usually have to make two separate batches :)
    Thanks for the great recipe.
