Ingredients

  • I know a lot of people that suffer from constipation as a result of having chronic pain and having to take the medication for that. This is a recipe that uses natural ingredients, is easy to make and works well. I used only organic ingredients. The recipe came from my Brother-in-law, a family doctor, who had a patient waiting for spinal surgery. She and her mother found this recipe and swear by it.... shopping list
  • 2 oz (56 g) senna leaves (health food store) shopping list
  • 8 oz (224g) pitted prunes (works out to be about a cup) shopping list
  • 8 oz (224g) figs (ensure a moist brand, works out to be about a cup) shopping list
  • 2 cups of pitted dates shopping list
  • 2 cups of dark raisins shopping list
  • 8 cups of boiling water shopping list
  • 2 cups of brown sugar - if you like things sweet add this but I didn't and I thought it was fine. shopping list

How to make it

  • Pour the boiling over the senna leaves. Let steep 10-15 minutes, then strain the leaves out. Longer is not better.
  • Put all the ingredients and the senna liquid into a large non-stick pan and cook for about 30 minutes (until soft and liquid is absorbed). Stir often.
  • Process with blender in small amounts.
  • Keep in refrigerator. I've also froze some of it in small containers since it makes quite a bit.
  • Start with one tablespoon each morning
