How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 450.
  • Pour shortening in a cast iron skillet then place skillet in oven.
  • Place cornmeal in a bowl and whisk in milk and egg.
  • Add fennel and pepper then stir until thoroughly blended.
  • Stir the hot shortening into the batter then pour the batter into the hot skillet.
  • Bake 20 minutes then serve piping hot with butter.
