How to make it
- Preheat oven to 450.
- Pour shortening in a cast iron skillet then place skillet in oven.
- Place cornmeal in a bowl and whisk in milk and egg.
- Add fennel and pepper then stir until thoroughly blended.
- Stir the hot shortening into the batter then pour the batter into the hot skillet.
- Bake 20 minutes then serve piping hot with butter.
