How to make it

  • Combine shortening (the original recipe calls for SPRY)
  • molasses , and Brown sugar in a saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil over low heat and boil for two minutes.
  • Remove from heat (fire) and cool to lukewarm.
  • Add beaten egg and mix thoroughly.
  • Sift together flour, salt soda and spices.
  • Add to molasses mixture and blend well
  • Pack tightly in an 8 x 8 greased pan and chill for several hours (if you are going to roll them out and cut them)
  • If you want, you may roll the dough into cookie dough logs to be cut later into small round discs.
  • Chill all for several hours and then either roll and cut the cookies out, or cut cookie discs from the dough logs.
  • Sprinkle with sugar or sugar crystals and bake on greased cokie sheets for 10-15 minutes in a 350 degree oven.
