Old Fahioned Apple Squares

- Pastry dough: shopping list
- 2 1/2 cups flour shopping list
- 1 Tbs sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 cup shortening shopping list
- 1 egg yolk plus milk to make 2/3 cup shopping list
- 1 egg white ( to brush over dough ) shopping list
- Filling: shopping list
- 1 cup cornflakes slightly crushed shopping list
- 6 cups apples, peeled , sliced shopping list
- 3/4 cup sugar shopping list
- 1 tsp cinnamon or to taste shopping list
- powdered sugar icing shopping list
How to make it
- Make dough:
- Mix all together until smooth and pliable on a lightly floured surface
- Roll out half the dough to fit a 11 x 15 inch pan
- Sprinkle cornflakes over dough.
- Combine remaining ingredients and spread evenly over dough.
- Roll out other half and cover the filling.
- Slit crust in a few places
- Brush top crust with the egg white.
- Bake in a preheated 400F oven for 10 minutes
- Reduce heat to 375 and bake 25 minutes longer.
- Drizzle with a powdered sugar icing while warm.
- Cut when cool.
- Serve with ice cream or whipped cream if desired.
