THREE LAYER BARS This recipe came from an estate sale. I obtained it when I purchased the family collection from the Donovan Estate in Fate Texas in 1991.

Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 egg slightly beaten
  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup shredded coconut
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • Filling:
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 small package vanilla pudding mix (not instant)
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • Topping:
  • 8 ounce bar milk chocolate cut into pieces
  • 1 tablespoon graham cracker crumbs

Directions
  1. Grease a rectangular baking pan.
  2. In medium saucepan over low heat melt 1/2 cup butter and cocoa then remove from heat.
  3. Add vanilla and egg then mix well.
  4. Stir in 2 cups crumbs, 1/2 cup powdered sugar, coconut and nuts then mix well.
  5. Press mixture in bottom of prepared pan then refrigerate.
  6. In medium saucepan over low heat melt 1/2 cup butter.
  7. Blend in milk and pudding mix stirring constantly until mixture thickens about 5 minutes.
  8. Beat in powdered sugar until smooth then spread over crust and refrigerate 30 minutes.
  9. In small saucepan over low heat melt chocolate stirring constantly then spread over filling.
  10. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon crumbs then refrigerate 15 minutes to set chocolate and cut into bars.
