How to make it

  • Mix together maizena, flour, custard powder and salt and make into a thin mixture with some cold milk
  • Bring the rest of milk to boil and slowly add the flour mixture, stirring continuously
  • Continue stirring, taking care that there is no burning
  • Add beaten egg yolks and mix well
  • Remove from heat and cool slightly then fold in beaten egg whites and add vanilla essence
  • Spread thin layer melted butter in dish. Then add spoonfuls of the custard. Pour teaspoon of butter over each dumpling and then dust with sugar/cinnamon mixture.
  • Pour the remaining butter over the dumplings. Ensure a full cover of sugar/cinnamon
  • Serve hot

    Slight vocabulary confusion:
    In South Africa, is vanilla essence the standard vanilla flavouring suspended in alcohol, or is it an extra-reduced double or triple strength flavour? It looks like the term is used differently in different areas.

    Sorry I forgot America was about a century behind the rest of the world. Teaspoon is 5 ml and 250 gran a half a pound. I know your gallon is smaller than an Imperial one do not know if a US pound is the same as an Imperial pound
