How to make it

  • Preheat oven to 425.
  • ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  • Pour a thin layer of oil to cover the bottom of an eight inch round cake pan and place in oven to heat.
  • Cut shortening into flour well.
  • Pour milk in and stir until wet.
  • Pour into well heated pan and bake for fifteen to twenty minutes or until browned.
  • Invert onto plate.

    This is similar to what my Southern Mom made and called Hoecake. If she was out of flour she used Bisquick. Always made it in a cast iron skillet on top of the stove. Lord do I miss it and her :)

    grandmacooks ate it and said...
    Now this is what I've always called hoecake, and what my parents called hoecake-flour bread, not cornbread. But we always cooked it on top the stove on an iron griddle! Can't be beat!
