How to make it

  • Melt the butter in a small skillet. Add onions and garlic and cook, stirring frequently, until golden brown, about 5-6 minutes. Set aside.
  • Place potatoes in a pan with the salt and cover with boiling water. Cook over medium heat until soft. Drain the potatoes and place in a mixing bowl.
  • Add the smoked salmon to the potatoes and mash together with a potato masher. Beat in the sauteed onions and egg. Add the lemon juice, hot pepper sauce and chives. Mix well and form into patties.
  • Heat oil in a large skillet. Brown cakes on both sides, about 2 1/2 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels. Serve with lemon wedges.
