This is an old recipe from a very good friend of mine. The sweet relish brings everything together to give it the finishing touch. I bought dill relish one time and NEVER again.....you need the sweet to finish it. Hope you like.

Ingredients
  • 1 stalk of celery
  • 1 medium green pepper
  • 1 small sweet onion
  • 3 pounds ground chuck
  • 20 oz ketchup (not sure if they sell 20 oz anymore so I buy 24 oz)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons sweet relish
  • 2 tablespoons white vinegar

Directions
  1. Chop up fine....
  2. celery, green pepper & onion.
  3. Brown 3 pounds ground chuck with your chopped celery, green pepper and onion.
  4. Salt and pepper to taste.
  5. Drain very well.
  6. Then add....
  7. ketchup, water, sweet relish & white vinegar.
  8. Stir it up and let simmer.
  9. (Smell of vinegar will disappear as it cooks).
  10. I've put the sloppy joe in a slow cooker and it simmers very well that way or just on low heat on the stove.
  11. Makes about 12-18 sandwiches.
  12. Depends on how much you put on the bun.
